What does the Great Commission require of the local church?
Respond:
To fulfill Jesus« command to »go and teach all nations” (Matt. 28:19), the church must:
- To preach the Gospel without ceasing.
If the church is to reach the world with the Gospel, it must begin by preaching the gospel to its neighbors. The first step is to preach the gospel clearly and faithfully in every public gathering. - To teach obedience to all that Jesus commanded.
The Great Commission is the command to make disciples of Jesus, that is, those who follow Him, imitate Him, and obey Him. The more disciples grow in maturity, the better witnesses they become. - To equip every church member for personal evangelism.
Evangelism cannot be the responsibility of the pastor alone. The church must train and encourage all its members to evangelize. Conduct Sunday school classes on evangelism. Recommend resources such as «"Christianity Explored" for personal use. Pray regularly with the church for evangelistic ministry. - Seek opportunities to collaborate with missionaries in other countries.
Churches should strive to reach not only their neighbors with the Gospel, but also those places where the name of Christ is not yet known (Rom. 15:20). Seek partnerships with like-minded people who are already working in other nations. - Pray that God would raise up church members for missions abroad.
The circumstances in each church will be different, but all should pray that the Lord will call someone from their church to go into mission among other nations.
