Why don\u2019t I just say, \u00abThe watershed issue in every generation is the authority of Scripture\u00bb? I admit that this may sound a bit clumsy. Even the term \u00abwatershed\u00bb needs some qualification. Imagine a mountain range with a crest from which all the rain or snowmelt flows irrevocably to one of the oceans. The flow of water may take many turns, but the ocean it is headed for has been determined long before that\u2014at the watershed.<\/p>\n

So too is the question of the spiritual watershed. When the human mind and heart are confronted with a crucial issue, their orientation determines how the process of thinking and feeling will proceed. This process may take many ambiguous turns, but ultimately it leads to one of the oceans.<\/p>\n

\u00ab"To see biblical reality in all its truth and authenticity, we need new eyes.".<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Not every issue is a watershed. People may have different views on some issues and not be separated by \u00aboceans.\u00bb But the watershed issue is so important and defining that even if the surrounding terrain seems similar, the rivers flow in different directions.<\/p>\n

The authority of Scripture<\/b><\/h2>\n

Another term that needs explanation is \u00abauthority of Scripture.\u00bb In our \u00abConfession of Faith,\u00bb we describe the authority of Scripture as follows:<\/p>\n

\u00abGod\u2019s purposes, as revealed in the Bible, are the ultimate and final authority for testing all claims to what is true and right. In matters not dealt with in the Bible, truth and rightness are judged by criteria consistent with the teachings of Scripture.\u00bb.<\/p>\n

The foundation of this belief is as follows:<\/p>\n

\u00ab"The Bible, consisting of sixty-six books of the Old and New Testaments, is the inerrant Word of God, orally inspired by God and without error in the original manuscripts.".<\/p>\n

Simply put, the fact that Scripture is the Word of God means that everything it teaches is true, and everything it demands must be done. It has the final authority over what is real and right. We believe that this is what the Bible claims:<\/p>\n

    \n
  • \u00abAll Scripture is inspired of God.\u00bb (2 Tim. 3:16).<\/span><\/li>\n
  • \u00abFor prophecy never came by the will of man, but men spoke from God as they were moved by the Holy Spirit\u00bb (2 Pet. 1:21).\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
  • \u00abWhich things also we speak, not in words which man\u2019s wisdom teacheth, but which the Holy Ghost teacheth\u00bb (2 Cor. 2:13).<\/span><\/li>\n
  • \u00abHeaven and earth will pass away, but my words will not pass away\u00bb (Matt. 24:35).<\/span><\/li>\n
  • \u00abEvery word of God is pure.\u00bb (Prov. 30:5).\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
  • \u00abThe Scripture cannot be broken\u00bb (John 10:35).<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    We believe that the evidence for the truth of these claims is clear enough for ordinary people\u2014if God will allow them to see it.     The Valid Authority of Holy Scripture<\/b><\/h2>\n

    Why don't I just say, "The watershed issue in every generation is the authority of Scripture"? Why add the word "effective"?<\/p>\n

    \u00abThe watershed issue in every generation is the effective authority of Scripture\u2026\u00bb<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

    The issue of the watershed is not simply the authority of Scripture, but its effectiveness in forming a heart filled with joy and agreement and a mind with a changed perception. It is possible to accept the authority of the Bible (and sign the \u00abConfession of Faith\u00bb) but not see reality as the Bible describes it, and not value what the Bible calls beautiful. Until we accept the reality of biblical teaching as truth and rejoice in what the Bible rejoices in, its authority remains formal\u2014it is not an effective watershed.<\/p>\n

    For example, the Bible says of Christians: \u00abYou died\u00bb (Col. 3:3), \u00abYou were raised\u00bb (Col. 3:1), and \u00abyour life is buried with Christ in God\u00bb (Col. 3:3). This is a biblical reality. However, many Christians have nothing that corresponds to this reality. If you were to ask them about the realities of their lives that correspond to these statements, they would not be able to do so. Therefore, these biblical teachings are not effectively authoritative in their minds.<\/p>\n

    The same can be said about what the Bible calls precious or beautiful. Philippians 3:8 and Matthew 13:44 teach that Jesus is more valuable than anything we have or could have in this world. But thousands of people who profess Christianity value other things more than Christ. They rarely talk about Christ as something pleasant, and instead their thoughts and conversations often focus on movies, social media, sports, and politics.<\/p>\n

    This shows that the revelation of the supreme beauty and value of Jesus is not effectively authoritative for them. The authority of Scripture is perceived as wrapping paper: \u00abI really like this gift. It is beautiful,\u00bb meaning that the wrapping paper is beautiful, even though the contents of the gift may be unknown, unpleasant, or simply inconsequential.<\/p>\n

    Identifying stress points<\/b><\/h2>\n

    Where there is no personal or cultural conflict with the Bible about what is real and good, the ineffective assertion of biblical authority may go unnoticed. People say that the Bible is an authoritative source. For a time, their culture and personal ethics may conform to biblical behavior. Thus, it appears as if the Bible does indeed have effective authority in their lives. But this may be an illusion.<\/p>\n

    The real test of the Bible\u2019s effective authority comes when a cultural point of tension arises\u2014a controversy. For example, is homosexuality a sin? If people who practice homosexuality do not repent, can they enter the kingdom of heaven (1 Cor. 6:9-10)? If a culture recognizes same-sex marriage, is it true marriage (Eph. 5:31-32)? Are same-sex relationships \u00abnatural\u00bb or \u00abcontrary to nature\u00bb (Rom. 1:26-27)? Is marriage between a man and a woman the only marriage that reflects Christ and the Church?<\/p>\n

    \u00ab"The fact that Scripture is the Word of God means that it has the final authority on what is real and correct.".<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

    When a cultural issue becomes acute and personal, it reveals whether or not biblical authority is effective. Has our claimed authority really been effective in changing our perception of reality and rightness? Is biblical authority merely a wrapper for teachings we don\u2019t like?<\/p>\n

    The realities it reveals<\/b><\/h2>\n

    In summary, we can say that \u00abthe watershed issue in every generation is the effective authority of Scripture.\u00bb But that is not the whole point of what I expressed in the first sentence of this article. I added the phrase: \u00abThe watershed issue in every generation is the effective authority of Scripture and the realities it reveals.\u00bb Now we can understand the meaning of this addition.<\/p>\n

    I would like to point out that authority in itself does not lead to the consequences we have been talking about. It is the realities revealed by authoritative teachings that change our perception of reality and our enjoyment of beauty. The Spirit of God reveals to us reality as such, and beauty as real. Authority can attract our attention, but it cannot change our hearts.<\/p>\n

    The teachings of Scripture and the realities it reveals do not become true and beautiful to us simply because they are affirmed by authority. Our minds and hearts do not work that way. You can make a child eat vegetables because you have the right to, but you cannot make him love them. That is not what authority can do. It can keep a child at the table and even influence tastes, but it cannot create them.<\/p>\n

    Authority can affirm reality, but it cannot make you see it. So you can uphold biblical authority because that is what is expected of you, but not have a changed mind and heart that can see what the Bible presents as real and rejoice in what the Bible considers beautiful.<\/p>\n

    Divine gift<\/b><\/h2>\n

    This transformation of mind and heart occurs not only through submission to authority, but through the divine gift of seeing and tasting. To see biblical reality as it is, we need new eyes. And to savor what the Bible reveals to us as beautiful and sweet, we need new tastes.<\/p>\n

    \u00ab"You can say that the Bible has authority, but not feel the value of what the Bible calls beautiful.".<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

    For example, the Bible teaches that wives who submit to their husbands, as the church submits to Christ, is beautiful (Eph. 5:24), and husbands who love their wives as Christ loved the church is also beautiful (Eph. 5:25). This is a biblical reality. But if your mind doesn\u2019t see it and your heart doesn\u2019t love it, no authority can make it real and beautiful for you. Authority doesn\u2019t work that way.<\/p>\n

    You can acknowledge authority, but it will not be effective until realities become for you what they really are through the Spirit. You must see the real as real and the beautiful as beautiful. And, importantly, you must see the terrible as terrible.<\/p>\n

    It is important to affirm the authority of Scripture, but it is not enough. The Spirit of God reveals the truth and beauty of biblical realities, creating a new vision and a new taste. We see and enjoy what the Bible presents as true and beautiful. The Spirit does this through the words of Scripture. When this happens, authority becomes effective, dividing generations at the watershed of God\u2019s word.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
